Local Union #1273, Eugene, OR

Fellow members of Local 1273

My name is John Watts and I recently had the honor of attending the 12th Annual Delegates Convention in Spokane, Washington as alternate
delegate. The convention was a three day event on August 14-16, 2008 with over 250 delegates representing five states (OR.,WA.,MT.,ID.and
WY) about 50% were new delegates like myself.

The convention began with a meeting very much like our own local meetings, except substantially larger. The convention was host to the Governor of Washington Christine Gregoire and the General President of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America and others. I felt that the best speech was given by one of our own members, State Representative Dist. 8 Paul Holvey. His speech was given in a no nonsense fashion informing us of the work that he is doing in Salem for both the U.B.C.and everyone in our state.

The convention also hosted dozens of workshops and forums ranging from new delegate training to finance and bylaws as well as caucus for
interior/exterior and piledrivers. The best informational resources was talking with people who are involved with Union organizing and
political action all over the Northwest.

The primary reason for this convention was to hold elections for the various officers of the Pacific Northwest Regional Council of
Carpenters. As a new delegate the process was foreign to me, but fortunately I was accompanied by Jack Mcdonald and Bill Chistopherson who are both veterans of the election process. They guided me through
the historical and personal dynamics of the election which are
difficult to report upon. I will note that our own Local President Bill Chistopherson won his election by a wide margin in a race marked
with narrow victories.  Enough said the results of the election are listed below:

Executive Secretary Treasurer – Doug Tweedy, LU1388
President – Bruce Dennis, LU247
Vice President – Roger Hornbuckle, LU2396
Warden – Rockey Marshall, LU770

Roger Johanson – LU2396

Bill Chistopherson – LU1273

Jerry Auvil – LU 2154
Pete Savage – LU247

Lance Fritze – LU1691

Montana
Mary Alice McMurray – LU557

Mary Ellen Renz

In conclusion I must say that my delegate experience was both educational and enjoyable.
I find it reassuring that the views of Local 1273 have a voice beyond our own hall with Bill Chistopherson  at the regional level and Paul Holvey in Salem.

 Thank you for your interest.

 I welcome any questions.
